CRANIAL ALPHA / POSTERS EXPLAINED

I often use symbolism in my work, have done for decades.  My first book COMPANY OF SHADOWS was all about using the sub-conscious mind when being creative.  Yet that in itself has been a cryptic side of my art , I do get little things into commissions from time to time. 

CRANIAL ALPHA : GRAPHIC NOVEL being my own project means I do not need to hold back.  I am crafting the story and art, its been a dream to create this project for a long time and symbolism plays a huge part of the creative process.

The crescent in the first image symbolize extinction.  Note the crescent is present in the design of both characters, the crescent is also horns = they are beings of extinction /  overseers, the devils of the story. The pyramid, at least this one, represents the power of man, of creation, fate. It is a story of destiny repeating itself on a molecular level. When you see a pyramid shape, it represents a moment of change / fate.  Look for the pyramid in each page.

As far as explaining all the other different layers in each page, well I'll leave that to the viewer.  Have fun.

I really need to stop having retro flashbacks and start doing more of own work but hey, while I'm in the zone... another re-imagining of a character from the MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE toy range/original cartoon.  BUZZ-OFF



Retaining all the fundamental design elements yet giving a character your own spin is important.  First break it down  to iconic imagery and memorable aesthetics then start a your re-design.  Ask yourself  what do you want to achieve with this design, what is the purpose of the character, his traits , his personality. Then pull that out .

Ok So the content will be a mix , all new images but some will be created from character designs. I settled on a balance between illustrative and poster style presentation. This classic Skeletor image for example. Started life a character design, I feel this way of presentation gives him far more of a presence.  I need to shake off my concept art background and this is a great way to do that.

Had a tough few day keeping on track, I figured out what it was with a little help from friends. Doing all the art then not being able to show it makes you feel hollow on such a long project.  So I am releasing small sneak peaks from time to time.  Helps me keep the momentum going..

I really think the trick with making this book happen is trying to block out all of the self doubt. It is a very long period ( 7 months at least ) to commit to a project with no initial financial gain.  All those voices of self doubt telling me to give up or worst still show all the art now and dont keep it back. Show it now to gain publicity and obtain short term work.  The mental games are tougher than the actual art execution.  I am creating the best work of my life but cant show it and cant use it to get work.  Today was a bad day, yet persevered and created a what I feel is one of my best pieces so day by day I have to keep fighting to make this happen. If it was easy..

Debating whether to add 'creatures' I decided no. The majority of the characters are bi-pedal, some are wildly disturbed, surreal and barely human yet still not in the realm of creature. I just dont want a bunch of alien 'monsters' however I do feel there is room for ethereal God like manifestations.  In the vein of Lovecraft  but purely my own take on that vibe. Perhaps 6-12 of these.

The first image of 2018 is a Lovecraft inspired one.  I tend do characters in bulk, that way you keep in the zone so to speak.  There will be at least 6 more H.P.L images in the final book.

There are series of images centered around all kinds of themes including  H.P.L , Biochemical forms, spiritual machines...even MOTU ( which has been so much fun to do ).
